Sally Ride by Lynn Sherr6/9/2023 It makes this extraordinarily talented and bold woman - an inspiration to millions - come alive. Sherr's revealing portrait is warm and admiring but unsparing. This is a rich biography of a fascinating woman whose life intersected with revolutionary social and scientific changes in America. In Sally Ride: America's First Woman in Space, Lynn Sherr writes about Ride's scrupulously guarded personal life, with exclusive access to Ride's partner, her former husband, her family, and countless friends and colleagues. She also cofounded a company promoting science and education for children, especially girls. In both instances, she faulted NASA's rush to meet mission deadlines and its organizational failures. After a second flight, Ride served on the panels investigating the Challenger explosion and the Columbia disintegration that killed all aboard. A member of the first astronaut class to include women, NASA chose her for the seventh shuttle mission, inspiring several generations of women. Sally Ride made history as the first American woman in space. Redeeming Zorus by Laurann Dohner6/8/2023 I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so. Transcription kate atkinson review6/8/2023 I ripped through the book in just two lazy sessions spent on the couch. There are deep secrets which are only revealed when you think that every possible drama has finally played itself out. The real story is how Juliet changed in her relationship with the organisation over the years. In the midst of the confusing and sometimes paradoxical deployment of national energies that were unleashed by numerous countries in those years stands Juliet Armstrong, who works for MI5 as a typist and then as an operative in her own right. In the scenes set in the 1940s the fight is against Nazism and in the period immediately after the war the fight is against Communism. But it is also a timely novel of ideas because of the way it discusses the political movements that animated that era. This engrossing spy novel is set in England during the war and in the period immediately after it. Our missing hearts reviews6/8/2023 For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Keep reading this book review for my full thoughts. It felt like seeing pieces of my fears reflected all in a dystopian setting that seems to get closer each day. And as an Asian American, Ng knew exactly the type of story to deliver which would make my heart break. As someone who loved Little Fires Everywhere, I knew I had to read Our Missing Hearts. My utmost for his highest devotional6/8/2023 From there, I wrote the beginning “seeds” of a prayer to point my heart in the right direction as I talked to God about that day’s reading.” Personal work I also wrote down a few questions that would challenge me to apply the main points. “To get a better handle on the main points from each day, I summed up each day’s reading in a bite-sized sentence or two. “It it was hard for me to take in the meaning of each reading, particularly when I was still trying to process the reading from the day before. Jed and Cecilie have read My Utmost for His Highest “off and on since 1992.” In 2008, Jed tried to read it daily for an entire year. We also discussed their experience researching Oswald and Biddys Chambers to write the book ( next post, Part II). I interviewed Jed Macosko about A Daily Companion (today’s post, Part I). Cecilie Macosko, A Daily Companion to My Utmost for His Highest is the result of years of reading and studying Oswald Chamber’s devotional first published in 1927. To allay that issue, Discovery House published a contemporary guide in fall 2014. My Utmost for His Highest has long been a challenge for some readers to understand. The farseekers6/8/2023 Originally published in Australia as The Wrong Thing, the book features an ordinary housecat who stumbles upon something otherworldly.
